VAN GOGH

AT THE LUME

06/11/2021

This was the first time out and about since the beginning of the sixth lock down. A little nervous and incredibly excited; we donned our masks and vaccine certificates, and we ventured to the Van Gogh at The Lume - brought together by Grande Experiences. The scale was impressive but the art direction and animation fell a lot flat. What was essentially a PowerPoint presentation timed to ABC Classic FM with a few twee stock and 3D composites thrown in, there was a missed opportunity for a more imaginative, youthful retelling of Van Gogh’s work. Imagine, Loving Vincent (without the bad rotoscoping or wild storytelling) but specifically designed for The Lume space and further accompanied by an artist such as Nicholas Jaar - the king of reinterpreting our cultural understanding of music and sound.

Luckily, the interplay between the shutter speed of my DLSR and the RGB gamut thrown by the projectors created a glimpse of what could have been.

A video still. So cool!

The photographs above show the real to life colour accuracy of the exhibition, taken on a mobile phone, compared with the images captured above. The distorted colours are created by an interplay between the shutter speed on my DLSR and the RGB gamut thrown by the projectors.
