Work In Progress: Untitled Animation

‘Untitled’ is a 2-minute animated exploration of what it means to try and connect with someone. It specifically explores how protective mechanisms, communication issues, and shame are barriers to developing a genuine connection with someone else. The project is currently ongoing and is take a little while to complete. I have completed the scripting, character design, storyboarding, style frame, animatic and test scene with the final animation, colouring and compositing underway.

Animatics are to test the timing of the posing and to get a feel of the camera movement and direction.

At this point, I had no idea how the animation was to look as a cohesive piece. I generally like this freedom to experiment and play with the style - allowing the piece to grow organically into what it need it be. I was playing around with colour pencils and charcoal, enjoying the waxy texture of the pencils and how the charcoal wouldn't lay on top of the pencil, and it all clicked! Below is what came of these experiments. Hint: the pink stands are based off enoki mushrooms - which I was eating a lot of at the time.
