Giidayn Mirrlarl

(Mutton Bird Island)

22/01/2020

In January, I visited Gumbaynggirr Nation; including Dorrigo Rainforest, Bellingen and Garlambirla (Coffs Harbour).  We woke up as the moon was saying it’s final farewells. We raced to meet the sun, before it broke above restless seas. Giidayn Mirrlarl stood steep, craggy and colossal for tired eyes; a home to Yolla (Short-taild shearwaters) and energetic Coffs locals in athleisure. A sigh, before the upward hike to reach the eastern most outlook.

There is something special in early mornings. I often find that having a camera lends to having a greater sense of connection to who I’m with, the place I am and the creatures that are around - I try to be incredibly intentional with the photos I take. This was no different this morning.
